About Schaff Homes - Meet the team
Family owned. Spokane built.
Some companies grow into a family. We started as one.
Schaff Homes is a full-service design-build remodeling company based in Spokane, Washington, founded in 2020 by five people who already knew and trusted each other, Ryan, Karie, Melvin, Ethan, and Sid. That foundation hasn’t changed. In 2023, Jess joined as Principal Designer, bringing in-house design into the mix and completing the full design-build model the company runs on today.
We design it, we build it, same team the whole way through. Most of our work is full renovations on older Spokane homes, the kind that need real attention, structural, systems, and design, all figured out together before a single wall comes down. We work with homeowners throughout the Inland Northwest, including Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls, Liberty Lake, and Spokane Valley. Custom homes and new builds are part of what we do too, and that side of the business is growing.
Since 2020 we’ve completed more than 125 projects across the region, from kitchen and bathroom remodels to whole home renovations and custom builds, every one of them managed by the same in-house team from first sketch to final walkthrough.
What you won’t find anywhere else is this team. People who show up, sweat the details, and genuinely care about getting it right, not because it’s expected but because that’s who they are. You’ll trust us with your home and we won’t take that lightly. We also happen to be a lot of fun to work with, and we think that matters too.
Jessica HodgsonCEO + PRINCIPAL INTERIOR DESIGNER
Jess grew up in Spokane, which means she has a real understanding of how people live here, what they value, and what a home needs to do for a family in the Pacific Northwest. She studied fine art at Spokane Falls Community College, earning her AFA before realizing she wanted something that combined creativity with structure and purpose. Interior design turned out to be exactly that.
She spent years working in the trade materials industry before joining Schaff Homes in 2023 as Principal Designer, and that background shows in how she works. She knows what things actually cost, how they’re sourced, and what holds up over time. That knowledge is woven into every design decision she makes.
What drives Jess is the puzzle of it. She wants to know how you live, what you love, and how you need a space to function, and then she figures out how to make all of it work together in a way that feels entirely like you. The goal is never a space that looks designed. It’s a space that feels right. When she’s not on a job site or deep in a design set, you’ll find her with her family, tending her cut flower garden, or hosting a 90s and 2000s hip hop dance party. Usually all three in the same weekend.
Ryan SchaffSALES + PROJECT MANAGER
Ryan didn’t set out to build a design-build company. He came up through the trades, running a roofing business before founding Schaff Homes in 2020 with his family. What started as a construction company grew into something bigger when the pieces came together: the right team, the right process, and a shared belief that building well means doing every part of it right.
Today Ryan runs sales and preconstruction at Schaff Homes, which means he’s usually the first person you talk to and the one making sure the numbers actually work before anything gets built. He knows every subcontractor in Spokane, has an instinct for what a project needs before the drawings are done, and has a way of making people feel like they’re in good hands from the first conversation. Because they are.
Outside of work, Ryan is happiest when he’s created a space where people can gather, whether that’s on his own property with family and friends or somewhere entirely new. His most recent adventures have taken him to the Philippines, and he will absolutely eat your food and drink your coffee without being asked.
Karie SchaffOFFICE MANAGER
Karie didn’t exactly seek out the construction industry. Her brothers convinced her to come help start Schaff Homes in 2020, and it turns out that was a very good decision for everyone involved. She came in with a background in operations from her time at a moving company, which gave her a head start on the kind of behind the scenes work that makes a business actually function.
What Karie does at Schaff Homes is hard to put into one sentence because it’s everything. Receiving at the warehouse, billing, invoicing, receipts, insurance, licensing, keeping the team stocked with snacks. If something needs to be tracked, processed, filed, or remembered, Karie owns it. The company would not run without her and everyone knows it.
If she could be anywhere right now it would be Maui, which is completely understandable. She loves animals more than most people, which also tells you everything you need to know about her.
Sid BrittonPROJECT MANAGER + SITE SUPERVISOR
Sid grew up framing houses, which means he came to Schaff Homes already knowing how things are built from the ground up. He’s not a Schaff by blood but he’s been part of the family since he was young and has been claimed as a brother, which says everything about who he is and how he operates.
He started at Schaff Homes as a framer, which is exactly where someone with his background belongs. From there he moved into site supervision and has grown into project management, a natural progression for someone who has always been as comfortable with people as he is with construction. On any given day Sid is scheduling subs, managing client communication, coordinating materials, keeping budgets on track, and making sure jobsites are moving the way they’re supposed to. He’s the reason things happen when they’re supposed to happen.
Fair warning: Sid does not know a stranger, and if you get him talking he will not stop. That’s not a flaw, it’s how he builds trust with everyone he works with, clients, subs, and the team alike. When he’s not on a jobsite you’ll find him camping with his wife, daughter, and dog in their motorhome, which is exactly the kind of reset someone who gives that much energy to his work has earned.
Melvin SchaffSITE SUPERVISOR
Melvin is family, a Schaff brother who came in with a natural gift for tile and has been with the company for six years. He built his reputation as Schaff Homes’ in-house tile setter, the person you call when the work needs to be exactly right, and as the company has grown he’s moved into a site supervisor role where that same obsession with detail applies to everything happening on a jobsite.
Detail is Melvin’s superpower. He notices things other people walk past and he won’t sign off on something that isn’t right. That standard has shaped the quality of work Schaff Homes is known for in ways that are hard to overstate. If it’s on his jobsite, it’s going to be done correctly.
Don’t let the exterior fool you. Melvin can read as a little grumpy until you know him, and then you realize he’s one of the biggest softies on the team who cares deeply about the people around him. When he’s not working he’s spending time with his fiancée and their dog Peach, traveling whenever he can, or heading to Alaska in the summer for salmon fishing. A man of range.
Cam SchaffSITE SUPERVISOR
Cam is Ryan’s son and has been part of Schaff Homes in some capacity since the very beginning. He came up through field labor, learned the business from the ground up, and has grown into a site supervisor role that fits him well. There is something to be said for someone who has done the work at every level and Cam is that person.
On the job Cam does what needs to be done to keep things moving. He shows up, figures it out, and doesn’t make a big deal about it. That reliability is exactly what a fast moving job site needs and exactly what the team counts on him for.
When he’s not working he’s spending time with friends and family, out fishing, or tracking down good ice cream. A man of simple and excellent priorities.
Ethan SchaffFIELD CREW
Ethan is a Schaff brother and one of the five who started the company in 2020. From day one he has been the kind of person who shows up, figures out what needs to happen, and does it without a lot of fanfare. That’s still exactly how he operates.
On the job Ethan leads demo crews and has a genuine knack for sourcing materials and getting the best deal around, which matters more than most people realize when you’re trying to keep a project on budget without cutting corners. He’s also the first one to jump in wherever the team needs him, which makes him the kind of person every job site needs at least one of. If there’s a problem, Ethan is already working on it.
He is, without question, the heartbeat and resident hype man of Schaff Homes—the person who keeps the energy up and the momentum going when a project gets hard. Just don’t get him started on conspiracy theories unless you have a few hours to spare and an open mind. He loves spending time with his two daughters, which tells you everything about what actually matters to him.
Nate WeilerFIELD CREW
Nate knew the Schaff family growing up, so when the opportunity came to join the team he already understood the kind of people he’d be working with. He came over from another company as a framer and millwork laborer and has become one of the most versatile people on the crew.
On the job Nate does all of it. Demo, framing, window installs, siding, millwork, whatever the project needs. That range makes him invaluable on a remodel where no two days look the same and the ability to pivot without losing momentum is everything. He gets things done quietly and correctly, which is exactly the kind of person you want on a job site.
He has a quiet sense of humor that sneaks up on you. He’ll say something when no one is listening and it takes a second to realize how funny it was. When he’s not on site you’ll find him outdoors with his family, camping and soaking up anything nature has to offer.
